"Doctor, where's my son?" I woke up on the hospital bed just after giving birth.
"Dr. Brown took the child away," he said.
Dr. Brown, mentioned, was my husband, a renowned hematologist. I was sure Max had taken our son to save our daughter.
My daughter had leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant. So I became pregnant again. At five months, tests showed success.
I was thrilled. My daughter had a chance to live!
Suddenly, a nurse rushed in, "Ms. Flores, Kitty's condition is worsening. She might not make it."
My head spun, "Isn't Kitty's father performing her surgery?"
Max had promised me. As soon as our son was born, he would take him to save our daughter. I reminded him again before entering the delivery room.
The nurse looked puzzled, "No, he isn't."
I froze in an instant.
Then where did he take our son?
As I moved, a sharp pain surged from my lower abdomen. Furrowing my brow, gritting my teeth, I got out of the hospital bed, not even bothering to put on shoes.
I took out my phone and hurriedly called Max.
As soon as he picked up, he said excitedly, "Carina, Jenny got injured and urgently needs a blood transfusion. Our son also has the RH blood type, so he can donate to her."
My already pale face turned even more deathly white in an instant.
Max actually took our newborn son to donate blood to Jenny!
I was on the verge of losing my mind with anger, my fingers trembling uncontrollably as I gripped the phone.
"Max, are you insane?! Our son was just born, and you took him to donate blood to Jenny?! You know very well that Kitty is waiting for our son's bone marrow to save her life, don’t you?"
Max remained indifferent. "Don't worry, I'm a doctor, I know what I'm doing. Just donating some blood won't harm him. After Jenny's surgery, I'll bring our son over to save our daughter. It's a win-win."
I felt the urge to kill Max, but thinking about my daughter still waiting for me to save her, I had to calm down.
"The nurse said Kitty is on the verge of dying. Bring our son here now, right away!"
Max hesitated for a moment, "Got it."
Dragging my body, I made my way to the ICU. There, I saw my daughter lying on the bed with an oxygen mask, and my heart ached terribly.
"Kitty!"
Kitty was mature beyond her years, comforting me, "Mom... don't worry, Dad is a doctor. He promised he would save me."
My throat felt like it was stuffed with cotton, unable to speak.
Seeing me silent, Kitty looked towards the door of the ward and asked, "Dad... why isn't he here yet?"
I called Max again, but he still didn't pick up.
Looking at me, Kitty said, "Mom, I..."
Before she could finish, she suddenly started convulsing. I panicked, turning to the doctor beside me.
"Dr. Clark, please, save my daughter!"
My husband was a leukemia specialist, yet here I was, begging his colleague to save our child.
How ironic.
Kitty was rushed into the operating room for emergency treatment.
I stood barefoot outside the operating room, consumed with worry.
Every passing moment was excruciating.
Bent over from the pain in my abdomen, I couldn't stand upright.
During the agonizing wait, I kept calling Max, but he never answered. Our daughter was in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant, yet he chose to save Jenny first, using our son's blood!
He was just born!
I hate him so much!
Kitty was undergoing surgery inside, and I couldn't bring myself to leave and find Max.
I don't know how long passed, but then the doors of the operating room opened, and I rushed forward anxiously.
Dr. Clark removed his mask, his expression grave. "Carina, Kitty didn't make it."
I stood there, mouth agape. "What... what are you saying?"
It couldn't be true. My daughter couldn't be dead!
Refusing to believe the cruel reality, I cried out. "Dr. Clark, Kitty is so strong. She can’t be dead. She was just talking to me. Please, perform another surgery. Please..."
Dr. Clark, looking pained, gently took hold of my arm. "Without a timely bone marrow transplant, there was nothing more I could do. Kitty has died. I'm so sorry."
My legs gave out, and I collapsed to the floor.
Kitty was dead! My daughter was dead!
